My creative activity for Day 12 of Art Every Day Month was to take a Crochet 101 class at the local Joann's. My grandmother is visiting and she went too. What a wonderful grandmother / granddaughter activity!
Our teacher, Lynn, was fabulous (i.e. - very patient!) She did an excellent job explaining each step and demonstrating the various stitches. She also gave each student ample one-on-one instruction. [So if you're in Louisville and want to learn crochet or knitting, Lynn's your gal!]
We learned five essential stitches:
ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
tc = treble crochet
hdc = half-double crochet
Lynn also explained how to introduce a new color or skein of yarn, how to "tie off" at the end of a piece, and how to weave the tail ends into the piece for a nice finish.
I'm told I now know all of the stitches that are used for any crochet project. I'm not setting out to make a sweater for my dog, Riley, or anything like that - but I do aspire to make granny squares. I have a short attention span and think the granny squares will give me a sense of accomplishment before my attention span wanes. Ultimately I'd like to assemble the squares into something, but probably not a doggie sweater - I don't think Riley would ever forgive me if I made him wear a sweater!
Happy Creating!
